There are a number of technical requirements that underpin the operation of PROJECT in a box. The system is built with .NET and this means that the PCs that the server and the Windows Apps operate on must have the .NET framework version 2.0 installed.

The server uses either Microsoft SQL server as its database.  One of these must be installed before the server can be correctly configured for operation.

Hardware and software requirements for the Windows App installs are relatively low due to its 'thin' nature and processing power isn't a significant issue, the PCs must have at least Windows XP SP2  operating system to support the .NET version 2.0 install and a number of the clients functions require the presence of Outlook, Excel and Word at 2007 and also Project (2003 or 2007) although some back compatibility may be possible.

The host computer (desktop, laptop or conventional server) for the server must run  XP Professional, Vista Professional or Windows 7 Professional, Windows Server  2003, 2008, or a server operating system which provides IIS, SMTP and windows indexing services.

The hardware for the server will depend on the load anticipated in terms of the number of clients connecting and the quantity of file storage space anticipated for the files to be produced. PROJECT in a box stores all files in full format and this is the case for all legacy versions so the hard disk storage space requirement for large projects or programmes over a period of time can be significant.

There must also be an Internet or network connection present between an App and the server for the client to function.  The system can be run over an Internet dial up connection if required although file transfers will be slow and users should adjust their web services time out accordingly.  Running reporting over a dial up connection is not recommended.
