You can add new Windows Shortcuts to your project only when the File Explorer form is open and when your user account has sufficient Permissions (read/write or modify).

Adding a new File is the default mode of operation for new materials into the system and accordingly the File explorer interface is predominantly set up for this but new Windows Shortcuts (shortcuts) can be also be added using the tab in the add File form:

  • In the File Explorer Tree View select the document to which you wish to add a file. Right click on the Document icon or name and then select 'Add File'.
  • In the Main Menu select the 'Document' menu and then the 'Add  File' option.

When adding a Windows shortcut the form is simple, You give the Shortcut a display name that will be included in the file tree (like the file name for a stored file).  You then include or browse to the Windows Shortcut required and provide a description of what is at the location and why you have provided it for users in the bottom part of the form.

When working with Windows Shortcuts the address and associated information is stored and managed from the server and will now provide the source for users clicking to view the 'file' in the system.  The destination location, file or executable isn't configuration managed from the PIAB server and is subject to change by whoever controls the destination space.

Note: You can link to any location or executable you wish with this approach but remember the address will be taken by other users as being relative to their local PC so this is best used with standard desktops or in a Citrix environment.
